Fire TV Cube Review

The power user's streaming device — updated April 2026

The Fire TV Cube is what happens when Amazon says "what if we crammed an Echo and a Fire TV Stick into one box and gave it steroids?" It's the most powerful streaming device Amazon makes, and it's the only one that can genuinely replace multiple devices in your entertainment setup.

But here's the real question: do you actually need all that power? For most people, the answer is no — the 4K Max is plenty. But for the right person, the Cube is genuinely transformative.

The Speed Difference Is Real

The Cube runs on an octa-core 2.0 GHz processor with 2GB of RAM. In practice, that means everything is instant. Apps launch in under a second. Menus scroll without any hint of lag. Switching between apps feels like switching tabs on a fast computer.

The 3rd generation Cube is also the first Fire TV device to support Wi-Fi 6E and has a built-in Ethernet port — no adapter needed. For anyone who's dealt with WiFi buffering issues, that Ethernet port alone might be worth the upgrade.

Hands-Free Alexa Changes Everything

This is the Cube's killer feature. You don't need the remote at all. Just say "Alexa, play The Bear on Hulu" from across the room and it happens. "Alexa, turn on the TV." Done. "Alexa, volume up." Done. "Alexa, show me my front door camera." Done.

The built-in far-field microphones pick up your voice surprisingly well, even with the TV playing. And because there's a built-in speaker, Alexa can respond even when your TV is off.

The HDMI Input — A Hidden Gem

The Cube has something no other Fire TV device has: an HDMI input. That means you can plug your cable box, game console, or Blu-ray player into the Cube, and control everything through one interface. Say "Alexa, switch to cable" and it routes the input.

What's Not Great

  • The price. At ~$140, it's more than double the 4K Max.
  • It's a box, not a stick. You need shelf space.
  • Same 16GB storage. Better than the sticks' 8GB, but still fills up.
  • The built-in speaker is mediocre. Fine for Alexa responses, not for music.
  • Same home screen ads. You'd think at this price point they'd skip the ads. They don't.

✅ What We Like

  • Blazing fast performance
  • Hands-free Alexa actually works well
  • Built-in Ethernet port
  • HDMI input for other devices
  • WiFi 6E support
  • Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos
  • Built-in speaker for Alexa

❌ What We Don't

  • Expensive at ~$140
  • Needs shelf space (not a stick)
  • Built-in speaker is just okay
  • Still has home screen ads
  • 16GB storage fills up
  • Overkill for casual viewers

Who Should Buy This

  • Smart home enthusiasts who want voice control for everything
  • People with multiple entertainment devices who want one hub
  • Anyone frustrated by slow streaming devices
  • Cord-cutters who still have a cable box they want to integrate
  • People who hate using remotes (seriously, hands-free is addictive)

Who Should Skip It

  • Casual viewers — the 4K Max does 90% of what the Cube does for 60% less
  • Budget shoppers — the Lite is a fraction of the price
  • People who don't use Alexa — the hands-free feature is the main selling point

🏆 Our Verdict

The Fire TV Cube is the best streaming device Amazon makes, and it's not close. But "best" doesn't mean "best for everyone." It's a power user device with a power user price tag. If you want hands-free Alexa, blazing speed, and the ability to control your entire entertainment setup with your voice, the Cube delivers. For everyone else, save your money and get the 4K Max.
